Tonka Ricochet R/C Rampage Flip

Missed It By *That* Much
I love Tonka. Just the name beams me back to my childhood. Remember the old Tonka commercial where an elephant steps on a Tonka dump truck? (Look up: Elephant Stepped On A Tonka Toy Hasbro TV Commercial 1970's.) That's why I'm a little disappointed with the TONKA RICOCHET R/C RAMPAGE FLIP.

No, it would not survive an encounter with a pesky pachyderm, but it is very tough. I really like the physical TONKA RICOCHET R/C RAMPAGE FLIP, and everyone in the family likes chasing the pets with it. The steering is a bit awkward with a lever for the left wheels a lever for the right wheels, but everyone gets used to it quickly. Smashing it into walls and making it flip is great fun. The remote even has a button that makes the little car do it's tricks. So what's not to like?

One word: infrared (IR). Tonka made the unit controlled by an infrared signal instead of a radio signal. The difference is that infrared needs line-of-sight to work. Think about your remote. For most...

Something New to Annoy the Dog With
To begin with, be aware that this is a small indoor toy, 4-1/2" x 4" x 2", not the large outdoor toy you might, like I did, confuse it as a variation of: Tonka 2 Sided Stunt 27 MHz 3 Channels 4x4 Radio Control Vehicle - Grey/Orange Color RICOCHET R/C with Suspension Lift for High Ride Plus Remote Control, Batteries and Charger (Vehicle Dimension: 10" x 18" x 4-1/2"); in fact it is only marginally larger than the remote controller/charger. Of course this would be obvious if you bought it in in a store, but if you are ordering online, it isn't as clear.

Second, you will need 5 AA batteries, which are not included. Some reviewers have complained about this, but unless Tonka was going to spring for 5 name brand, high drain batteries, IMHO you are better off buying them yourself because the cheap, foreign made batteries you usually get with "batteries included" wouldn't last very long both powering the controller AND recharging the car. Good quality NiMH rechargeable AA's...
fun, a bit too wild to control
This crazy thing is quite impossible to control unless you are less than 10 years old. This is virtually impossible to steer in a straight line and is highly terrifying to dogs, cats and ancient grandmas. This unit is very well build and robust. It survived heart stopping falls off stairs with no issues. The kids love it, I hate it just because I spend time fishing it out from under couches and book cases. Great fun, lots of violence. A plus: the battery does last a long time...no irritating recharges!

Good toy, enjoyable but has a big flaw in design ...
I won't go in too many details.
The toy is well built and challenging to maneuver.
Pretty fun to have, both for young and older kids.

The huge problem is the remote control which is IR based, not radio as most of them.
This means you need to be very careful were you play with it this car. A room with no furniture would be perfect '

Great r/c car for kids
My 6 yr old son just got the Tonka Ricochet Zig Zag Jolt for his birthday and it has handled lots of "love" well. It needs recharged often but after it's recharged goes great! The recharge is nice becuase then the car gets to rest. It has accidently gone down stairs twice and still works like a charm. Once in a while he will turn the switches the wrong way and so just check all the switches (there is a channel switch and on/off switch on the remote and the car)otherwise not bad r/c car for kids. He has 3 brothers-2 younger and 1 older and it has survived all of them as well. This is the first one to do that, so we say thumbs up to this r/c car.

It has been several weeks now and the car is still going strong we are just now going to change the batteries and it has survived the love of a 6 yr old, and his brothers - 2, 4, and 8 yr olds. In fact the others are hoping to get some r/c cars like his for their b-day.
Cool toy!
The Tonka Ricochet R/C Zig Zag Jolt is an awesome stunt car that spins fast, turns over when it wants to and does a special stunt when the stunt button is pressed. The only drawback for me is that we live in a small house, so there isn't much room to drive the car around. If I had a large room, such as a basement to work in, I could have a lot more room to enjoy all the tricks the car has.

The Tricky Little Tonka Trickster
Disclosure: I received a free Tonka Ricochet Trickster as a BzzAgent to try out with my kiddos. The opinions I express here are my own.

This little guy will make even your wee ones experts at performing vehicular acrobatics. In addition to the regular forward and backward levers, there's a special "trick" button that makes performing your Trickster's specialty simple enough for even old fogies (like me).

Tricksters come in 2 varieties: Buzzsaw and Rampage. The Buzzsaw's special trick is spinning. Press the trick button once to spin in one direction and again to spin in the opposite direction. The Rampage's special trick is flipping. Both cars can be made to do both tricks without using the "special" button. We received the Buzzsaw for review.

Tonka XT Ricochet Tricksters are small and rechargeable. You just plug the car into the remote to recharge. The remote takes 4 AA batteries (not included). Tonka says charging takes about 20 minutes and...

No antenna!
This car is an awesome little stunt car for kids. It is a perfect stunt car for kids who have outgrown the younger rubber plastic remote cars (like the Tonka Bounceback Racer) but aren't quite ready for the bigger remote control cars. It is also perfectly priced at under $25. This car may be small (about 2 by 4 inches) but it definitely can go! You control it like a typical remote control car but anytime you want you push the trick button on the remote and this particualar model will start to spin (there is also a flip and jolt model.) You can also recharge the car by plugging it into the remote with the attached cord. The cord does have a tight fit back into the remote, but I have gotten the hang of smooshing it back in. The remote though does take five "AA" batteries that are not included. If the car flips it has a blue/orange design and drives with the controls in reverse.

Overall, this car was a hit with my 3 and 4 year old boys. They are able to zoom it around...
So much fun!
My youngest son (5 years-old) just bought this with his birthday money. It is easy to manipulate, fun to use, small and quick. It's perfect! The car and remote both seem very sturdy and well built. The only difficulty is the charger, which is best handled by an adult or older child (maybe 10-12, depending). The biggest downside is the recharging time, but even that isn't too bad (about 15-20 minutes). I recharged it after my boys went to bed and then spent about 15 minutes playing with it myself! I'm considering writing to Santa and seeing if he'll bring me and my oldest son (7 years-old - if he didn't get his own, he'd steal mine!) one for Christmas ;-D

Bottom Line: Fun car at a very reasonable price (I think Santa can afford two more!).

Edited 12/28/2011 - It took us a bit, but we finally figured out that this car doesn't seem to work on a radio signal, but more like a TV remote. What does this mean for the kids playing with it? Well, it means that they have to...
